The Structure of a Frisbee Family

Image
Frisbee Family and Organization The Club Ultimate Frisbee team here at Fredonia has been a part of my college experience for my entire time here. Now in my third year, I have become the President of the club and learned a lot about how to run a sports team and a college club. A Frisbee team isn't much different then any other club teams on campus. We receive money from SA to take our team to tournaments, we hold fundraisers to do what we can to pay for jerseys and equipment and we give back to the campus anyway we can. The one thing I didn't think I was going to need to be able to do was deal with a family of over 50 people. The picture above was taken of the Club Ultimate Frisbee team at one of their early Fall Tournaments in 2017 As the President I work with my elected cabinet to run the team. I work with a Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, multiple committee coordinators, and multiple captains to make sure that everyone on the team is involved and inform...

What to Bring to a Tournament!

Image
What to Bring to a Tournament! During a full year at college, a Club Ultimate Frisbee team can play anywhere between 4-8 tournaments. When you're a new player on a team, or maybe just learning the sport itself, tournaments can be a bit scary. And it all starts with packing for the tournament the week before. Making sure to bring everything you need for a tournament can make even the best of players a nervous wreck.   I remember packing for my first tournament in college and freaking out over having everything I needed. Did I remember my cleats? What about a pillow? Do I have that extra pair of socks in case its wet? These questions can run through your head even on the way to the tournament, after all your stuff is thrown in the car. One great way that our team here at Fredonia makes sure that we all remember what to pack, is we have a packing list in our Facebook group with the most important things you need. This list includes things such as: Clea...

Spirit of the Game

Image
Spirit of the Game One of the most important aspects of Ultimate Frisbee is the fact that most games and tournaments do not have referees. This changes once the level of play is risen past college and into club and professional, but for the majority of Ultimate games that I have and will ever play in are non-officiated. Calls on the field are made by the players in the game and more specifically, on the field. This rule is known as the "Spirit of the Game".  This is a very controversial part of Ultimate Frisbee that many teams run into trouble with. Being as competitive as any other competition, team's and player's emotions can rise and fall, sometimes causing frustration and anger. People are always going to get upset, but it is a known rule of Ultimate Frisbee that Spirit of the Game must still be followed.  "The integrity of Ultimate depends on each player's responsibility to uphold the Spirit of the Game, and this responsibility sh...

The Height Game!

Image
The Height Game! If there's any physical characteristic that can help with your Frisbee playing, its height. As a friend of mine writes in his article, "You Can't Teach Height", being tall and lengthy is a great advantage on the frisbee field. If you're lucky enough to be given the luxury of height, then why not take advantage of it! Article Link:  https://taigaultimate.com/blogs/up-the-line/you-cant-teach-height My friend, Austin Darling, has been on the Fredonia Ultimate team for five total years now, I've known him for three and throughout the time I've played with him he has been a dominating playing on the field. Coming in at 6'7'', he both recognizes and understands that he is tall and can most definitely use that to his advantage. His article is published on a well know Ultimate Frisbee company website and is great informational reading about the game of Ultimate Frisbee. Being tall doesn't just make you instantly an in...

Defensive/Offensive Field Positioning The sport of Ultimate Frisbee is played with seven players on the field for each team. Three of them are usually "Handlers", and the other four are usually "Cutters". This may differ from team to team depending on how they choose to play, but this is what is most commonly seen. The Handlers are your more experienced players with better throws and Ultimate knowledge. The Cutters are your athletic players or younger team members who run around downfield to get open for a Handler to throw to. This set up is the same defensively as well, three Handlers and four Cutters. It is set up this way so if the offense turns over the disk, by dropping it or throwing it away, the defense then takes over as offense with the same set up they would if they had started the point on offense. These seven players can be arranged a number of ways on the field. This also depends on the style of play a team wants to run or it can vary depending on t...

Some Ultimate Vocab

Image
http://ultimatefrisbeehq.com/ultimate-frisbee-terms/ Ultimate Frisbee can sound way more complicated then it actually is to play. This is because there are a bunch of terms that are used for actions taken place while playing. Words like "mark", "breakside", and "bid" all represent an action that an Ultimate Frisbee player can do while on the field. A mark represents the positioning of the defensive player who is guarding the opponent with the frisbee in his hand. Breakside is the side of the field that the mark has his/hers back to. A bid is when a player dives for a frisbee attempting to catch it or defend it away. There are plenty of other terms that are used as "Ultimate language" that you will here on the field. Ultimate Frisbee HQ has a great collection of Ultimate vocab on there website linked above. They do a neat job alphabetizing the words as well as provide pictures and diagrams with the words. The definitions and explanations that...
