The Structure of a Frisbee Family
Frisbee Family and Organization
The Club Ultimate Frisbee team here at Fredonia has been a part of my college experience for my entire time here. Now in my third year, I have become the President of the club and learned a lot about how to run a sports team and a college club. A Frisbee team isn't much different then any other club teams on campus. We receive money from SA to take our team to tournaments, we hold fundraisers to do what we can to pay for jerseys and equipment and we give back to the campus anyway we can. The one thing I didn't think I was going to need to be able to do was deal with a family of over 50 people.

As the President I work with my elected cabinet to run the team. I work with a Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, multiple committee coordinators, and multiple captains to make sure that everyone on the team is involved and informed with what is going on. We do our best to work with the school and make sure everything runs smoothing with our SA money being used correctly, our practice times being scheduled and relayed to the team, us being signed up correctly for tournaments and paying, and other communication within the team and between the team and the school of Fredonia.
Our team consists of over 50 students, including both the men's and women's teams. Just like any other sports team, we are all super close on and off the field. That's what builds chemistry and allows players to play better as well as get along better. One things for sure, the Fredonia Ultimate Team is one close family. We are all very close friends on campus and off, and love to hangout outside of team practices. It can sometimes be tough being the President, having to run and make a speech in front of all your friends. Its a bit intimidating. It can be stressful having to be in charge of your friends, not wanting to force them to do something they don't or yell at them if they are slacking. It has its upside though as well. You know your friends care about you and are going to trust your judgement. Why else would they have voted for you. A Frisbee team isn't just a team, its both a club and a family. It takes some serious love and patients to be apart of one, but it has been one of the best experiences of college.
I never knew you were the President of the Frisbee team but that must be awesome! Ultimate Frisbee is a really cool sport and its awesome how much energy and commitment you guys have to keep the team successful.
ReplyDeleteI really liked your point about being president of a club. It's challenging. For me, delegating was the hardest part- telling people what they could do for certain projects. I wanted to be able to handle it all myself because like you said, it can all be intimidating. Also, cracking down on anyone who's slacking can be hard too but it's necessary for keeping the group going. Great post! Very relatable!
