"Breaking a Defensive Heart"
In their video, Mario O'Brien and RISE UP Ultimate demonstrate some of the basics of playing offense during an Ultimate Frisbee game. They then continue to dig deeper and deeper into the tactics and strategies that any player can use to make them a much better player. The title of the YouTube video, stated above, is a perfect representation of how much passion and intensity go into every point during an Ultimate Frisbee game.
This episode, being the beginning of season 6 of O'Brien and RISE UP's YouTube show, demonstrates in itself how experienced these people are at discussing and teaching the sport of Ultimate. For anybody trying to learn about the sport, whether you're a three year player trying to get better or a new player learning for the first time, these are the videos you should be watching. There are people out there who love Ultimate Frisbee so much, and all they want to do is share it with others. The Frisbee community if exponentially growing around the world.
What people don't realize is how equally competitive and goofy Ultimate Frisbee is. That's right, "goofy". That's the kind of environment around Ultimate Frisbee and everyone gets drawn into it. There's a sense of pride that follows the enjoyment of playing. O'Brien's title, "Breaking a Defensive Heart", is a great representation of the more intense aspect of Ultimate Frisbee. The video is to be take with a little more seriousness about how to play the sport. With that being said, the information provided in the video does an excellent job at teaching how to be the most efficient at offense. The title itself shows the confidence that O'Brien has in the information he is demonstrating. It assumes that if you listen and understand what the video is saying, your offensive skill will be good enough to break a defensive players heart. In the competitive environment that Frisbee provides, being beaten by the player you are defending, even once during a point, is greatly irritating. Whether it's the final point of the Regional's final or the last point of your scrimmage, the pride that players have in the game is enough to break a heart.
Interesting! I don't know much about Ultimate Frisbee except what I heard when it started in the 70s or early 80s or so. You present a lot of good information quickly and concisely here. Two suggestions though: you describe the video and add your own commentary, but I can't tell which is which. Quote a line or two, include a still from the video itself, and focus on that. It's more immediate, less passive, and that way I can tell the difference between you and your source. Second suggestion is organization of ideas. Start perhaps with the title--which is interesting and attention-getting, and work your way from there. Use it, perhaps, as a point of focus to return to. Everything you need is here, your writing just needs a bit of polish to make all the best parts really shine.
ReplyDeleteI think this is so interesting and its great that our school has this available for people to join! I know a few people who are in it and they love it and have made so many great friends! Is it something that comes with practice and how often do you compete?
